Some Reasons Why We Are Over Medicating Our Bipolar Children

By Ken P Doyle

It is really sad in our society today being so obsessed with "feeling good, looking good" and "performing well." And because of that we have turned into a society of "medication freaks." This article tries to outline some of the problems we as a society are faced with today when our child or members of our family have symptoms of bipolar.

The First Problem " Pressures

One of the big problems is, teachers and everybody else are advising parents for their children to go on medication because we would like to have what we call a cookie cutter classroom." Everybody left and right these days are self taught authorities" in diagnosing problems with children, which is very frightening. If that is not frightening enough, over half of the parents were advised by the so called" authorities have insisted their pediatrician put the child on medication. These children were put on drugs because of pressures from non professional.

Problem Two " Quick Fix

The second problem is; we do not work to de-stress our lives, instead we take a pill and if its not working within an one hour or so , we take another dose. What we are actually doing, we are not giving time for our body do deal with the problem slowly. Another example, our little child sneezes we immediately rush for the children s medications. If they don't like it we must run to our local chemist to get the flavor that is right; it may be from some dust, which just needs some time to get out of the system, instead we put in drugs and medication.

Third Problem " Wrong Diagnosis

For children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( ADHD), a lot of doctors are quick to prescribe strong drugs to young children. While this may cure the present symptom, most of the time other symptoms which were not there before surface, so more drugs. Its like a person swallowing a fly, she had to swallow the spider to catch the fly and swallow the rat to get rid of the spider, that is what the medications are for. Most doctors do not want to admit that they do not know what they are doing and so pump drug after drug, stimulants, antidepressants and antipsychotics into the chills body.

Fourth Problem " Availability of Drugs

Because the present society is hooked with immediate gratification, the easy excess of drugs adds wood to the fire. Most of us who have the money to burn want the fix it NOW problem. Instead of becoming patient, we become very impatient to what is happening in our body. The body must be helped to use its own natural ability to fight its problems.

Fifth " Money

All pharmaceuticals are wanting to sell their drugs whatever the cost. Most doctors do not know the real strength of bipolar medications so familiar with outcome. Sometimes those who make the drugs and those prescribing it are all driven by money. This may offend some people, but aren't we fed up with system.

Finally

After all that is being said and before you run off to the chemist for your medications or your children s, it would be a good idea to just sit down and try another approach. It is the non medication approach which a lot of parents have done and proven successful. You child is precious that must not be pumped up by any medication we can lay our hands on.
