What Should a Good Dentist Do for You?

By Steven H. Poulos, DDS

You should have your teeth checked and cleaned at a dentist's office at least twice a year. In some particular cases, a dentist my recommend visits more often.

Of course the dentist will check for cavities and clean your teeth. And it is necessary that you attend to the health of your teeth and gums by having regular cleanings and exams. But there are other things that a good dentist will do at a check up to prevent future problems with teeth and gums and to maintain current health.

A dentist can gain insight into your overall condition and dental situation by discussing with you your medical history. He should ask about any medications you are taking, any existing health situation and any illness.

An examination of diagnostic x-rays are essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.

A check of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums should be done to screen for oral cancer.

A gum disease evaluation should be done by checking gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.

Specialized dental tools should be used to check every surface of every tooth for cavities.

Regular brushing and flossing cannot remove calculus. It is very hard plaque, cemented to the teeth. A dentist will use special tools to remove calculus above and below the gum line.

Plaque, a sticky combination of bacteria, food particles and saliva which is nearly invisible, must be removed. If the plaque has caused inflammation, that can be the beginning of gum disease.

Polishing the teeth removed stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

A dentist should help you determine what is needed from you at home to promote good oral health - for example, a dentist may recommend an electric toothbrush or special mouth rinses.

A dentist should discuss diet with you and recommend whatever is needed to improve dental health.

Now you know - there's more to good dentistry than twice a year checks for cavities and a cleaning. Pick your dentist by using this checklist.
