Treatments For Tinnitus

By Terry Rusty

Over the years a number of treatments for Tinnitus have been proven to work to a certain degree. Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a ringing or the sound of air rushing through your ear with no external source to explain the noise. Treatments for Tinnitus range from antibiotics to maskers to what is being called as Tinnitus retraining therapy. Through out this article I will cover these particular treatments for Tinnitus.

Antibiotics - Ringing in your ear can be caused by a simple infection which thankfully can be taken care of with an antibiotic described by a doctor. It is important that you get to your doctor quickly so the infection can be caught in its early stages ie. ringing in your ears, before it has the chance to progress to Tinnitus. As with any antibiotic drug it is imperative to take the medication as instructed and when it comes to antibiotics this means taking the full course of the medication. Not doing so can cause the infection to reappear much more harshly. Like any drug there are side effects that are common with antibiotics.

Maskers - Maskers are a small portable device looking very similar to a hearing aid and worn the same way. The Masker job is to drown out the ringing in your ears with a more pleasant noise. How effective a Masker will be depends on the person and the severity of their Tinnitus. To see if a Masker will work for you head over to the kitchen sink and turn on the faucet all of the way. Now if you just hear the rushing water than a Masker may work for you but if the main noise is still the ringing in your ears than chances are a Masker will not work for you.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy - Tinnitus Retraining Therapy hits on all sorts of levels with the combination of personal therapy and maskers. The counselors will try to help you to learn how to avoid the Tinnitus sounds with the use of cognitive therapy techniques. Maskers are commonly used in Tinnitus Retraining Therapy during the beginning of the therapy and in the end some people will no longer require the use of a masker.

Tinnitus is a hearing disorder that can lead to permanent hearing loss and can affect a person's day to day life. Along with the traditional treatments for Tinnitus there has been a number of breakthroughs that has seen the popularity of alternative medicine treatments explode in popularity and success. I would explore all available options and see which one will best help you to overcome and cure Tinnitus.
